Hold and spin slots use a feature in which qualifying symbols stay in place while remaining positions respin. New symbols can add values, reset a counter or unlock another part of the feature. The round ends under the game’s stated conditions, often when the available respins run out or the grid is completed.
The broad idea is easy to recognise, but the details vary. Not every game starts with three respins, uses the same trigger or awards a jackpot for filling the screen. This guide explains the counter, locked symbols, prize values and the rules to read before interpreting a nearly completed grid.
How a hold and spin feature works
A typical collection feature begins when enough qualifying symbols appear in the base game or another permitted mode. Those symbols remain on the feature grid while open positions receive further chances to add symbols. The exact trigger and entry conditions belong to the individual title.
1. Trigger the round
Read which symbols qualify, how many are needed and whether they can land anywhere or in specified positions.
2. Hold the symbols
Qualifying positions remain occupied. Their values or special effects follow the feature rules rather than ordinary payline rules.
3. Follow the counter
Open positions respin. New symbols may reset or change the counter; a blank result may reduce it. Check exactly what the game counts.
Hold and spin is often used as a broad description, while developers use their own names for related features. Similar labels do not establish identical mechanics. A title using Hold and Win, respin collection or another name needs its own rule check.
It is also different from a control that lets a player manually hold a reel between ordinary spins. In a collection feature, the game determines which qualifying symbols remain according to its rules. Do not assume the player chooses which prize positions to keep.
Our video slots guide explains the relationship between ordinary spins and feature rounds. For a different mechanism where winning symbols disappear and are replaced, see cascading reels.
Reading a respin counter
A counter is meaningful only alongside the reset rule. Some games begin with three chances, others with four or another amount. A new qualifying symbol may restore the original count, add a chance or activate a different rule.
A hypothetical three-respin sequence
A feature begins with three respins. A blank result reduces the counter to two. Another blank leaves one. A qualifying symbol then lands and, under this example’s rules, resets the counter to three.
If three later results add no qualifying symbols, the feature ends. This example illustrates a reset system; it is not the rule for every hold and spin game.
A reset can create more feature steps than the initial counter suggests. It does not mean the game has awarded a new cash-funded round each time. Check whether the feature total is calculated at the end or credited in stages.
Not every visible symbol resets the counter
A symbol can be decorative, an ordinary paying symbol or a special feature symbol. Read which ones count as new additions. A collector, multiplier or mystery symbol can have a particular effect that differs from an ordinary coin.
One empty position does not promise completion
A nearly full grid can look close to its largest award, but the picture alone does not reveal the chance of filling the remaining position. Do not infer equal symbol probabilities or a guaranteed final addition from the number of spaces left.
The same applies to pots, meters and other visual progress. Establish whether they track a defined persistent state or simply present a feature animation. A display suggesting progress is not enough to establish a must-trigger rule.
Casino welcome offers
These general welcome packages are separate from an in-game collection feature. Check the actual casino lobby for a title, then read whether it is eligible for promotional play. The table does not confirm availability of the developer examples below.

Common variations to check
Cash values and stake multiples
A locked symbol can display a currency amount, a multiplier or another unit. Establish whether its value is already converted into cash. If it displays 5×, read which stake is multiplied rather than assuming the number means five dollars.
Collectors and multipliers
A collector can sum particular values, while a multiplier can increase one symbol, a group or another defined award. Check whether the effect applies once or repeatedly, and whether later additions are included. Do not add values a second time if the displayed total already includes them.
Mystery symbols
A mystery position may reveal a value or special effect under stated conditions. The unrevealed artwork does not establish what it will become. Read when the result is disclosed and whether it changes the counter or grid.
Extra rows and expanding grids
Some features open more positions after a condition is met. Check whether those positions must also be filled for a top award, whether existing values remain and how the counter behaves during expansion.
Multiple grids
A feature may use more than one collection area. The grids can share a counter or have separate conditions, so read where additions count and how awards are combined. More screen areas do not automatically mean a higher return percentage.
These variations describe questions to ask, rather than rules shared by every title. Compare the exact game’s information panel with any promotional description before relying on it.
Official examples of different feature rules
Developer information shows why it is worth checking the trigger, starting counter and grid rules individually. These are mechanic examples, not a ranking or a claim of availability at the listed casinos.
Hot to Burn Hold and Spin
Pragmatic Play’s official page states that five or more money symbols trigger its feature, beginning with four respins. That differs from the assumption that every collection game needs six symbols and starts with three.
Fire Temple: Hold and Win
Playson describes an unlocking-rows mechanic within its bonus game, alongside in-game jackpots and mystery symbols. It illustrates why the visible starting grid may not describe the whole feature.
Buffalo Power: Hold and Win
Playson’s official information distinguishes its free-spins mode from a Hold and Win bonus game that can be triggered from the main game or free spins. The two features should not be treated as interchangeable.
Match the full title and provider. A sequel or similarly themed game can change the trigger, counter and prizes. Our new slots guide covers how to read release information without treating a new edition as mathematically equivalent to an older one.
Mini, Minor, Major and Grand prizes
Named tiers identify prizes within a game’s rules. Their values and triggers are not standard across developers. A Grand can be a fixed stake multiple in one game and a progressive pool in another.
Check whether a tier is represented by a special symbol, a collection condition or another trigger. A full grid may award a particular prize, change the sum of symbol values or have another outcome. Read that rule instead of assuming every completed screen pays the same type of jackpot.
The jackpot slots guide explains prize tiers and calculation bases. For growing pools and their separate qualification rules, see progressive jackpots.
Converting a displayed multiplier
A prize-value illustration
If a game’s rules define a 20× symbol using a $0.50 total stake, its value is $10. If the symbol already displays $10, multiplying it by the stake again would be incorrect.
Use the actual paytable to identify the base and whether a running total already includes the award.
Read currency separately from credit units. The AUD guide explains why account currency, payment currency and game credits can differ.
Feature entry, stake and optional purchases
Ordinary spins use the selected complete stake. An enhanced-bet setting or a feature purchase, where offered, can have a separate cost. Confirm the amount deducted rather than relying only on the base-stake label behind a purchase panel.
A hypothetical feature priced at 100× a $0.30 base stake costs $30. Entry does not guarantee a return of $30 or any specific prize tier. Read the trigger and guarantee rules, if any, rather than inventing a minimum award.
Our bonus-buy guide covers purchases and optional gambles. The real-money slots guide explains balances and the difference between a game award and a completed withdrawal.
The format does not establish RTP or volatility
Locked symbols and respins describe a mechanic. They do not specify the theoretical return or the spread of possible outcomes. Check the figures and rating for the exact configuration, including any optional mode.
Read high RTP slots and use the RTP calculator for long-run arithmetic. Compare high volatility and low volatility slots for the distribution of results.
A feature can finish with an award smaller than the money spent reaching it. Its animation and final credit do not, by themselves, establish a profitable session.
Casino bonuses and collection features
The word bonus has two meanings here. A bonus game is a feature inside the slot. A casino bonus is promotional credit or spins issued to an account. Triggering the former does not cancel the latter’s restrictions.
Check permitted titles, wagering contribution, maximum bets, expiry and cashout caps. Optional feature purchases can need separate checks even when ordinary spins on the same title are permitted.
For a hypothetical $25 bonus with 40× wagering on the bonus alone, the eligible turnover requirement is $1,000. That arithmetic does not predict whether the available balance will last long enough to complete it. Use the wagering calculator and withdrawal-limit guide.
Our welcome bonus guide covers account packages. For spins awarded under a promotion, see casino free spins; for spins triggered while playing, see game free-spins features.
Reading the feature on mobile and in a demo
On a phone, find the remaining counter, locked values and feature total before interpreting the sequence. Extra rows or multiple grids can reduce symbol size. Check the help panel and supported landscape layout if the values are hard to read.
A different device does not improve the odds. Our mobile hub, iPhone guide and Android guide cover practical controls and display checks.
A demo can explain resets and prize displays, but its credit has no cash value. A few practice features cannot establish trigger frequency or predict a cash session. The free slots guide explains these limitations.

Hold and spin slots: frequently asked questions
What is a hold and spin feature?
It is a collection-style feature in which qualifying symbols remain in place while open positions respin. New symbols can add values or change a counter. The exact trigger, reset and ending conditions depend on the game.
Do all hold and spin games start with three respins?
No. Starting counts vary. Some titles begin with four or use feature-specific changes. Read the actual counter and reset rule rather than applying one number to every game.
Does every new symbol reset the counter?
Not necessarily. The rules identify which symbols qualify and whether they reset, add to or otherwise affect the count. Ordinary symbols and special collectors can have different effects.
Does one empty position mean a Grand prize is close?
A nearly full grid does not reveal the probability of filling the remaining position. Check the rules, and do not infer a guaranteed award or equal position probabilities from the display.
Are Mini, Minor, Major and Grand values standard?
No. These labels belong to individual prize structures. Values, triggers, qualifying stakes and whether a prize is fixed or progressive can differ.
Are symbol values cash amounts or stake multiples?
They can be either, depending on the game. Read the unit and calculation base. A cash value already displayed should not be multiplied by the stake again.
Is a hold and spin bonus the same as a casino bonus?
No. The former is a game feature. The latter is an account promotion with separate eligibility, wagering, expiry and withdrawal conditions.
Does buying a feature guarantee its cost back?
No. A purchase pays the stated amount for entry under the game rules. Its resulting award can be lower than the price, and no minimum return should be assumed without an explicit rule.
Are all hold and spin slots highly volatile?
The mechanic alone does not establish volatility or RTP. Check provider information for the exact title, configuration and optional mode.
Can a demo feature award be withdrawn?
No. Virtual-credit results have no cash value. Practice mode can show counters and prize displays, but it does not predict cash results or establish feature frequency from a short sample.
